Product Reviews, Restaurant Reviews and Recipes: All GLUTEN FREE!
Canteen is a modern British restaurant situated at the back of the Royal Festival Hall, Southbank London. It is quite a large restaurant with a mixture of regular tables and booths. There is some limited seating at the bar area and we noted that larger tables are often shared between different parties when they are busy. On their website, they describe the set-up as “Canteen is committed to providing honest food that is nationally sourced, skilfully prepared and reasonably priced. All dishes are cooked to order and our menu changes seasonally to accommodate the best and freshest national produce. As with the rest of our menu, Canteen’s bar is British led. Our cocktails reflect the flavours of classic home-grown ingredients, and we serve a handpicked selection of beers, ciders and perrys that represent our country’s brewing history.” http://www.canteen.co.uk/
The menu is not the most extensive but they have regular dishes which are changed on a daily basis. For example, they offer a Fish of the Day, a Pie of the Day and various Roasts (on selected days). It was great to see they are catering for dietary requirements with a specific note on the menu indicating which dishes can be made GF.
From the dishes highlighted, I selected the Bacon Chop (although I declined the two Clarence Fried Eggs as I do not tolerate them) and a side order of chips. The chop was a little dry and therefore I could understand why they serve it with fried eggs as I would love to have enjoyed the yellow runny yolk mixing with the salty bacon chop but that wasn’t going to happen. The chips were lovely and both crunchy and soft, just the way I like them, with the thick cut meaty chop.
An really good GLUTEN FREE eatery in the heart of the Southbank. The staff were very well informed and the food, whilst “unpretentious” and “simple”, the meal was tasty and delicious.
