Restaurant Review: River Cottage Canteen @Plymouth’s Royal William Yard Docks.

Further down the coast at the historical Royal William Yard, Hugh Fernley Whittingstall has another Canteen Restaurant, just on the waterfront after eating at the River Cottage Canteen in Axminster (the night before). It is again, a strange place to get to with the large stone built dock buildings remodeled with luxury apartments on the upper floors and several eateries spread across this dramatic area. Again, it was good to book as despite the largeness of the site and the lateness of the evening, it was a packed inside and very busy. A very popular choice.

After eating (very recently: the day before) at the Axminster River Cottage Canteen, I was excited to be returning to experience another uncomplicated meal with fresh flavours and good food.  Pleased that the menu was moderately different, which is largely due to the use of local suppliers and seasonal dishes.

Despite being August, the soup sounded lovely and was GF! The Roasted Tomatoes & Balsamic Soup with Goats Cheese was wholesome and warming, well flavoured and hearty.

I was also served GF Bread which was warm and soft. (So good that Hugh could probably sell this and make a fortune as it didn't crumble and didn't crack!)

My Main Course: Sladesdown confit duck leg, pickled raspberries, gratin potatoes & bitter sweet jus (without the Black pudding which wasn't GLUTEN FREE).

Such a shame that I couldn’t have enjoyed the complete dish as I think the richness of the black pudding would have added to the contrasts on the dish but nevertheless, this was a truly magnificent main course, and very filling. And so no desserts as I was so full after the soup and the large main course but satisfied with such a good fresh GLUTEN FREE meal. Thank you Hugh again!
