Product Review: GLUTEN FREE Cakes & Biscuits and Cakes from The Perky Cakery

The Perky Cakery is based in Loughborough, Leicestershire and make a range of cakes and biscuits which are Free from “GLUTEN, LUPIN, EGGS, MILK, NUTS, FISH, CRUSTACEANS, PEANUTS, MUSTARD, MOLLUSCS, SOYA SESAME, CELERY and SULPHITES“. I found them in my last “Crate of Nothing” which was delivered in September 2014. They had made a special Rocky Road Bar for the GLUTEN FREE hamper and it was delicious.

Having tried many biscuit bars, this tasted fresh. The biscuit crumb was crunchy and sweet, the marshmallows were soft and gooey (like they always should be) and the dark chocolate was rich and lush. This was a definate winner, so much so that I decided to find them online and make a further order.  They have a bright and smart website which allows for online orders (on 09/09/11) so I ordered Lemon & Marshmallow Bars (5), Rocky Road Bars (5), Chocolate Chip Shortbreads (5) and Strawberry Burst Cupcakes (2) for a total of £25.20. I was then contacted and advised that they would “arrange a courier to deliver” at an additional cost of £10.20 but for a large order, this was acceptable.

Unfortunately, both Strawberry Burst Cupcakes had "burst" into the box.

The “regular” Rocky Road Bar is made in a mould and is substantially larger than the “original” I had tasted. It has a good shelf-life and is more substantial as a product than the “sample” I had received from Crate of Nothing. Indeed, it could be a meal in itself as it is such a meaty sweet dessert. The marshmallow didn’t seem as soft and gooey as the “original” but that might be due to the sheer size and amount packed into these bars. These I really like them as a good GLUTEN FREE Treat.

I advised Perky Cakery of my feedback and they responded very warmly. They have changed their delivery arrangements, unfortunately limiting their Iced Cupcakes until a new improved packaging solution arises. They also sent me new sized and new recipe Rocky Road Bars:

New bagged Rocky Road Bars. Inside cellaphane bagged bars filled with soft chewy marshmallow, crunchy biscuit, sweet juicy fruit and dark chocolate.

These new bars vary between 60 grams and 70 grams (depending on whether the piece is a edge piece). Shame they weren’t perfectly the same but definitely hand made with love. They tasted delicious and whilst they’re not the same “monsters” that they had been, the richness of the dark chocolate smothering the biscuit, the fruit and the chewy marshmallow pieces, makes them a good snack size.

They are a great GLUTEN FREE sweet treat.
