Restaurant Review: Niche, Islington, London… GLUTEN FREE Quiche

Located quite close to Sadler’s Wells Theatre in Islington, just a short walk from Angel tube station, Niche is a 100% Gluten Free restaurant, which is all about “serving good honest British comfort food with a modern twist. Our ‘niche’ is that everything on our menu is Gluten-free, but you wouldn’t know it!” so it was an exciting choice for lunch with non-GLUTEN FREE friends. They were being welcomed into my world!

As above, with a fully 100% GLUTEN FREE Menu, it was difficult to make a decision about eating lunch as there were so many favourites and dishes which I wanted to try. I quite fancied the fish and chips, imagining deep fried crunchy batter, I also quite liked the idea of a healthy salad as it was boiling hot in London as we experienced a minor heatwave, and I quite liked the sound of the Beef and Chorizo Pie as I am Northern and love my pies… I really enjoyed digesting the GF Menu.

Reading material…

So I decided to go for the Niche Quiche which was described as “our signature quiche is made here every day using our own special GF pastry, free-range eggs and double cream“. It was served with a side of mixed leaves and house dressing.

Food glorious food…

I also ordered a “basket of homemade Onion Rings” as I do missed them! Unlucky for us, they mixed up the order and presented us with a basket of hand-cut sweet-potato fries. (we were naughty and all tried one before asking for our onion rings. They were red-hot but deliciously crunchy with a soft sweet inside). The Onion Rings, when they came were great although a little pale in colour and the batter was light but did have a slightly powdery taste to them.  My fellow diners enjoyed a Chicken Ceasar Salad and these were bountiful and looked so tasty.

Large salads at Niche.

So even if you’re not GLUTEN FREE, the tasty food is prepared so it is all GLUTEN FREE so for a change, it was nice to be “normal” in the restaurant rather than having a separate Menu or having to amend the dishes. The service was relaxed and slow which suited our leisurely lunch so not sure it would be great for a quick business lunch but the food was so tasty it was worth it!
