Product Reviews, Restaurant Reviews and Recipes: All GLUTEN FREE!
Whilst staying in NYC, I took the train for a day-trip to Philadelphia. And of course, I ate very good GLUTEN FREE meals so here is my commentary on my experience in the City of Brotherly Love.
GLUTEN FREE Lunch: Rouge, Rittenhouse Square, Philadelphia: Set just a short walk from the main drag of shops in Downtown, this very busy restaurant has both inside and outside seating. And despite the November temperatures, a table outside was just what the Doctor ordered. A relaxed lunch location (which on their Facebook page is described as “For over fifteen years, Rouge has epitomized fine dining on Rittenhouse Square. A commitment to impeccable service, quality food ingredients and a memorable dining experience keep our customers coming back. Rouge is the square’s original dining destination and remains a favorite among both locals as well as visitors for its ambiance and park-side setting.” It certainly is a great location to watch the world (of Philadelphia) go by.
The Menu has no allergen information but our Server was well informed and went through many options that I could choose. It was a shame that I couldn’t have the Wild Turkey Burger (served in a GLUTEN filled bun with GLUTEN filled stuffing and probably Gluten- Gravy) but that sounded delicious so I opted for a simple salad: “Chopped chicken, Goat cheese, lemon-oregano vinaigrette” and our Server also outlined the additional salad bits (such as Olives) which were included in my dish but not stated on the Menu.
It was a great GLUTEN FREE salad which was rather filling and the different textures of the goat’s cheese with the soft leaves and the harder Olives was great. I managed to finish the whole plate and really enjoyed it.
But soon it was time for an Evening Meal, but I still wasn’t that hungry, so I opted for a great dessert (having known on a previous Trip that GLUTEN FREE Cheesecake was available!):
AFTERNOON TEA: (Gluten free Cheesecake) at The Cheesecake Factory, Philadelphia: A great lively restaurant which you enter by taking the double long escalator up to the main floor, with a long central bar and even an outside (balcony) seating area. Whilst it was busy, it was still early enough to secure a quiet booth and I requested a GLUTEN FREE Menu. The last time I went, I recalled it was “stars” inside the Main menu booklet which indicated which dishes could be made GLUTEN FREE but on Facebook, I had learnt that they had a completed separate GLUTEN FREE MENU which outlines all the dishes in a similarly sized booklet (although not as thick as the main menu).
I went for the desserts and found the “Godiva Chocolate Cheesecake” which is described as “Flourless Godiva Chocolate Cake, Topped with Godiva Chocolate Cheesecake and Chocolate Mousse”. And from the above picture, you can see apart from licking the plate, I thoroughly enjoyed it. It has a good hard base which gives the cake some structure. The thick mouse layers are creamy and chocolaty and of course, real Godiva pieces are included and add a contrast to this lush heavenly cake. Of course, there’s more chocolate on top and served with a decorative loop of chocolate and of course squeezy cream (not really necessary!). It is a delightful joy to have a GLUTEN FREE Cheesecake although a little confusing as from my research on Chocolate Bars and Chocolate Advent Calendars, I know that Godiva are not suitable for Coeliacs.
Indeed, on their own website, they state; “Does your chocolate contain gluten? ALL of our products including solid chocolate pieces may contain gluten. Any person with a gluten allergy should NOT consume ANY of our products” but when questioning the staff at the Philadelphia Cheesecake Factory, they advised that this Cheesecake is made specifically using no-gluten containing ingredients (sourced by and made by Godiva) and is separately held, to minimise cross-contamination. I have found it so delicious and chocolaty that I was tempted to take another slice home with me, well, back to NYC! So enjoy!
So in Philadelphia, I found Brotherly Love with the gorgeous GLUTEN FREE Godiva Cheesecake and a great GLUTEN FREE Rouge Salad.
