Product Reviews, Restaurant Reviews and Recipes: All GLUTEN FREE!
Hotelympia is the UK’s largest Foodservice and Hospitality event and and exciting event to see the latest product development and new innovations. Spread over four-days at London’s Excel Exhibition Center, there’s plenty of stalls /show stands, presentations to attend and even cooking competitions to watch: so a busy day out. The International Salon Culinaire at Hotelympia is the UK’s largest and most prestigious chef competition with over 80 classes over the course of four days so which ever day you attend, you will be guaranteed to smell something amazing and see it being cooked live in-front of you.
And new for 2016 is a Speciality Food and Health Pavilion. Hotelympia states “With recent allergen laws and increased knowledge on free-from foods, the search for the right products is at the top of every buyers list and this is the place to look first”. This is because: “the catering industry is missing out on an estimated £100 million a year by not catering for people with Coeliac disease and their friends and family. (Coeliac UK), New legislation requires foodservice operators to identify dishes containing any of the 14 allergens and Horizon’s latest QuickBite consumer eating out survey, conducted by YouGuv, revealed 41% of diners are influenced by health and lifestyle factors when choosing where to eat“.
To this end, I attended an interesting presentation on the Main Stage entitled “The Impact of Allergens in Today’s Restaurant Business” at Hotelympia. This presentation was hosted and facilitated by Michelle Berriedale-Johnson (who has been involved with food sensitivity for nearly 30 years, edits the FreeFromMatters family of websites and in 2008 she launched the hugely successful FreeFrom Food Awards, followed in 2011 by the FreeFrom Skincare Awards and, this year, by the new FreeFrom Eating Out Awards and her own blog). The panel also included Nicky Granger (who runs a restaurant Guide), Emma Read (Horizons researcher on the Food Service market), Sarah Ormond-Smith (who runs Oscars & Bentley restaurant which won the Free From Eating Out Overall Winner 2015) and Chef Giancarlo Caldesi
It was a interesting round-table discussion focused upon the growth of free-from foods, how restaurant Menu’s are growing with GLUTEN FREE offerings and adding new choices for allergen customers, and different approaches to creating allergen-friendly dishes. The panel was entertaining with great “real” stories and experiences shared including one of the panel who was a judge at the Free From Eating Awards who had judged Oscars & Bentley restaurant.
And whilst the Hall included lots of exhibitors, I stayed and enjoyed the Food offerings, finding the GLUTEN FREE offerings…

This information was correct as of March 2016.
But as I am learning, ingredients do change and therefore you should always read the label and check for yourself whether it is GLUTEN FREE or not!
