Product Reviews, Restaurant Reviews and Recipes: All GLUTEN FREE!

Attending & Tasting GLUTEN FREE at Hotelympia, Excel, London (March 2016)…

Hotelympia is the UK’s largest Foodservice and Hospitality event and and exciting event to see the latest product development and new innovations. Spread over four-days at London’s Excel Exhibition Center, there’s plenty of stalls /show stands, presentations to attend and even cooking competitions to watch: so a busy day out. The International Salon Culinaire at Hotelympia is the UK’s largest and most prestigious chef competition with over 80 classes over the course of four days so which ever day you attend, you will be guaranteed to smell something amazing and see it being cooked live in-front of you.

And new for 2016 is a Speciality Food and Health Pavilion. Hotelympia states “With recent allergen laws and increased knowledge on free-from foods, the search for the right products is at the top of every buyers list and this is the place to look first”.  This is because: “the catering industry is missing out on an estimated £100 million a year by not catering for people with Coeliac disease and their friends and family. (Coeliac UK), New legislation requires foodservice operators to identify dishes containing any of the 14 allergens and Horizon’s latest QuickBite consumer eating out survey, conducted by YouGuv, revealed 41% of diners are influenced by health and lifestyle factors when choosing where to eat“.

The impact of allergens in Today’s Restaurant Business at Hotelympia

To this end, I attended an interesting presentation on  the Main Stage entitled “The Impact of Allergens in Today’s Restaurant Business” at Hotelympia. This presentation was hosted and facilitated by Michelle Berriedale-Johnson (who has been involved with food sensitivity for nearly 30 years, edits the FreeFromMatters family of websites and in 2008 she launched the hugely successful FreeFrom Food Awards, followed in 2011 by the FreeFrom Skincare Awards and, this year, by the new FreeFrom Eating Out Awards and her own blog). The panel also included Nicky Granger (who runs a restaurant Guide), Emma Read (Horizons researcher on the Food Service market), Sarah Ormond-Smith (who runs Oscars & Bentley restaurant which won the Free From Eating Out Overall Winner 2015) and Chef Giancarlo Caldesi

It was a interesting round-table discussion focused upon the growth of free-from foods, how restaurant Menu’s are growing with GLUTEN FREE offerings and adding new choices for allergen customers, and different approaches to creating allergen-friendly dishes. The panel was entertaining with great “real” stories and experiences shared including one of the panel who was a judge at the Free From Eating Awards who had judged Oscars & Bentley restaurant.

And whilst the Hall included lots of exhibitors, I stayed and enjoyed the Food offerings, finding the GLUTEN FREE offerings…

Julian Plusant Macarons, Miracle Tree flavoured Teas, Aunt Gee's sauces and Brown Bag Crisps

Julien Plummart Macaroons, Miracle Tree flavoured Teas, Aunt Gee’s sauces and Brown Bag Crisps

  • JULIEN PLUMMART: Based in Brighton, these GLUTEN FREE Macaroons were beautifully crisp and deeply flavoured. On sale online as well as in their Restaurant and their Patisserie and some other local shops.
  • MIRACLE TREE: A selection of flavoured black teas which are GLUTEN FREE. Of course, Tea should be GLUTEN FREE but there are some which use WHEAT in the bags /ingredients. These included a CHOCOLATE flavoured black tea as well as several fruit flavours.
  • AUNT GEE’s: Spicy sauces which are all GLUTEN FREE. Run by a Mother, her daughter and son-in-law, they were offering tastings and seeking new locations to sell this hot sauce. And it was HOT!
  • BROWN BAG Crisps: With a range of standard flavoured crisps (lightly salted) to more exotic ones (Oak Smoked Chilli and Tiger Prawn with Chilli & Lime) all GLUTEN FREE.

And more GLUTEN FREE delights:

Agroposta Cordials, NIYM Nuts, INKKA Quinoa Pasta & Inspiral snacks

Agroposta Cordials, NIYM Nuts, INKKA Quinoa Pasta & Inspiral snacks

  • AGROPOSTA: A selection of handy Cordial pouches (including Lavender, Lemon, Sage Flower and Elderflower) which you add to water: all GLUTEN FREE.
  • NIYM “Nuts in Your Mouth”: Launched at the Show: a new bar snack company with flavoured Nuts with characters and playful branding: all GLUTEN FREE.
  • INKKA Quinoa Pasta: Brought over from Peru, this was quite tasty and firm in a multitude of shapes.
  • INSPIRAL: Showing off their new Coconut Pecks: flavoured with Raspberries and another more spicy one: Smokin’. Interesting snack although I don’t really like coconut!

More GLUTEN FREE delights:

Joe & Sephs Popcorn, Mitsuba biscuits, Darling Spuds & Darling Corn and KoJi Drinks

Joe & Sephs Popcorn, Mitsuba biscuits, Darling Spuds & Darling Corn and KoJi Drinks

  • JOE & SEPHS POPCORN: No new flavours from Joe & Sephs but small “snack” bags have been extended across their range. The newest flavour is Cappuccino which has a chocolaty coffee taste! Always a reliable GLUTEN FREE popcorn with a full rich flavour.
  • MITSUBA Crackers: These Rice Crackers were available in Teriyaki flavour (rather spicy for me) and Wasabi flavour (again, a little too spicy for me).
  • DARLING Spuds Crisps and Corn: A good snack with GLUTEN FREE crisps and GLUTEN FREE flavoured Corn.
  • GB Drinks: DJuiced drinks (mixing fruit juice with milk which I didn’t try) and KoJi: a refreshing Japanese water /fruit drink. These were launched at the show and are both GLUTEN FREE.

And finally:

Ten Acres & Nutella

Ten Acres & Nutella

  • TEN ACRES: It used to be just crisps but they’ve extended their range to now include flavoured Popcorns. The latest addition is a Cappuccino Popcorn which was light and coffee-ish.
  • NUTELLA: Which I know and love to be GLUTEN FREE. I had to discuss with them their “breakfast” tasting range as they were offering 5 items (all containing GLUTEN: porridge, french toast, brioche, bruschetta and scones!). They promised that at their next show they would introduce a GLUTEN FREE options so individual could try the GLUTEN FREE Nutella for Breakfast. They also had a huge Tic-Tac (also GLUTEN FREE!) and the largest tub of Nutella I’ve ever seen (sadly, not for purchase).

So some GLUTEN FREE products on show at Hotelympia that I tried and tasted.
