Last year I was actively involved with the “Is it Coeliac Disease?” campaign as I was featured as one of the “models” on the posters and leaflets launched with Coeliac UK’s Patron Caroline Quentin. I believe that we all should “give back” and this was my little way in supporting the work that Coeliac UK does. Indeed, I received travel expenses to go up to the photo-shoot in Birmingham but to the surprise of many friends: I was not paid for the “work” or the use of my image.
For 2016, the leaflet has been updated with a focus upon a new “model” and anemia, one of the widely known symptoms of Coeliac Disease. The campaign hopes to put people who are suffering with the symptoms of Coeliac Disease on a pathway to diagnosis, so they can be properly supported to manage their condition and avoid long term health complications. Coeliac UK aims to halve the length of time to confirm a diagnosis, which is currently on average 13 years, and reduce misdiagnosis of IBS by 50%. The long term goal is to confirm a diagnosis for an additional 250,000 people by 2020, so that these people are freed from not knowing what is causing their symptoms, pain and suffering.
Working with M&S, Coeliac UK requested for volunteers to be a Local Leaflet Co-Ordinators to support a National Day of leafleting. I had four local volunteers contact me (via Coeliac UK) and we distributed several hundred leaflets outside M&S Putney, West London, on Saturday 14th May 2016 simultaneously others volunteers were giving out leaflets across the UK.
If you are a member of Coeliac UK, they produce a comprehensive directory which covers over 16,000 food and drink items (including GLUTEN FREE Chocolate Bars and in June 2016, a new listing of Ice Creams). This is available in a paper-based Manual and online FREE to members of Coeliac UK.
