Product Reviews, Restaurant Reviews and Recipes: All GLUTEN FREE!
Excited to attend the FreeFrom Food Awards 2017 Winners Announcement and Celebration Party held at the Royal College of Physicians (in Regent’s Park, London). It is a grand affair with the many attending from the Industry and world of Free From Foods and the highlight has to be the Winner’s Buffet which is both an entertaining and tasty treat! In it’s tenth year, this award continues to grow and expand as the allergen complexities continue to be raised in the mind of modern consumers and innovated by the Industry. It has expanded into Germany and Ireland who now run their own awards and instead of awarding Highly Commended and Commended, they categories have evolved into GOLD, SILVER and BRONZE so theoretically, we could have a class of all GOLD (as they’re deserving of the accolade!) New categories announced for 2018 including a FODMAP friendly food class and a FreeFrom Food for Export reflecting changes. (And importantly links to Manufacturers and stock availability can be found at the FreeFrom Food Awards Website).
Amazing to see over 500 entries from some 208 companies of which some 94 where new to the awards and Michelle Berriedale-Johnson (Director of FreeFrom Food Awards and Editor of FoodMatter) lead the proceedings emphasizing the new focus from staples (such as bread and pasta) to lifestyle categories including Food to Go and Down the Pub. As followers will know, I support the FreeFrom Food Awards as well as judging the FreeFrom Eating Out Awards (the UK’s only industry awards by FoodsMatter set up to encourage innovation and celebrate excellence in the FreeFrom food industry ) I am actively involved in judging the Confectionery class, Desserts and Puddings, Meaty Ready Meals and Tea Time which has been so much fun. It is great to try different products, new innovations and exciting twists which you might not find in your shops! It is a delight!
And whilst there I met Isabel who was very pleased to have won in the Store Cupboard Class for her Yorkshire Puddings Mix:
And more GOLD Winning products in other categories including:
One of the categories that I judged was Meaty and Fishy Ready Meals:
I think it was the dumplings that we all loved. These were light and tasty and refreshing to be GLUTEN FREE and MILK FREE and EGG FREE!
And another category that I judged was the Tea Time class:
The Tea Cakes are so traditional as a sweet treat and of course, look and taste (I believe) like a regular product: so much so that non-allergen suffers enjoyed them as much as we did during our judging session. And the Banana and Chocolate Loaf cake was great and really rich and tasty for someone who doesn’t love that much cake: and we had to eat a lot of cake! I also loved judging the Desserts and Puddings:
The Profiteroles had a great sweet filling and the mint ice cream was amazingly crisp and minty with a strong menthol flavour. My final class that I judged in was Confectionery & Chocolate! One that I love and enjoy so much!
The Mini Fruit Bears were a real winner with all the judges as these sweets had natural flavourings and you could taste a difference with each of the different colours as well. The Truffles were delightful and so rich and lush as a little box of luxury chocolates. And a special mention to the D&D Dairy Free Mint Chocolate Holly Leaves which had a great menthol taste with thick dark chocolate and did I mention DAIRY FREE.
And then it was time for two special awards: The FreeFrom Super Hero Award recognising achievement in this field (sponsored by Lucy Bee) and Ultimate FreeFrom Food Award: Marble Mo. Full details of these will be commented upon in Part 2: Appearing soon on my blog as well as a full run down of the Winner’s Buffet (with award winning foods to try and taste!).
