Enjoying a GLUTEN FREE Dinner @River Cottage Axminster, Devon (Summer 2017)….

When passing close to River Cottage, as we like to see if Hugh Fernley Whittingstall is in his kitchen serving lunch as it a firm favourite of ours. They always serve good wholesome food and I have found them very accommodating with my dietary requirements. It has been a while since my last visit to River Cottage since we’ve been to the Canteen in Axminster and the Canteen in Plymouth but it was a real delight to be back.

They always have a great menu selection and this visit was no exception. Indeed, when I knew we were passing by I had tried to reserve a table but it didn’t have any space so we popped in on the off chance that we would get a table and dinner. Lucky for us, we were seated before other diners were turned away:

As noted on my last visit, they have amended their Menus and now add “Gluten Free” next to the dishes which can be made GLUTEN FREE rather than relying on the staff to discuss the options with you. This seems a more relaxed approach to meals and they also highlight “Dairy Free” and “Vegetarian” and “Vegan” options on the Menu. Our waitress advised that they had a special on which was a Duck Salad with a BlackBerry sauce and fresh Beetroots. This sounded lovely and whether it was the “sales” of the waitress but this seemed a light meal for an early dinner:

After confirming with the Chef that this was GLUTEN FREE, I choose this as wasn’t disappointed. The fresh orange and purple beetroot compliment the meaty duck pieces (which were plentiful) alongside the large Black Berries (which I didn’t really eat as I don’t like the pips!) alongside a few leaves and a light sweet dressing. It was a good hearty plate with contrasting textures with the stickiness of the drizzled sauce, the lightness of the leaves and the earthy flavours of the beetroots: a great simple dish which I really enjoyed.

So if you’re in Devon /Dorset and passing through, I would recommend popping into River Cottage and enjoying a healthy GLUTEN FREE Meal.

But as I am learning, ingredients do change and therefore you should always read the label and check for yourself whether it is GLUTEN FREE or not!
